Climbing Island Peak in Nepal

Introduction

Nepal, home to the world’s highest peaks, offers some of the most thrilling trekking and climbing experiences. Among its many adventure destinations, Island Peak (6,189 m) stands out as a perfect introduction to Himalayan mountaineering. Officially known as Imja Tse, this peak combines a challenging climb with breathtaking views of Everest, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam.

Itinerary Breakdown

Day 01 – Arrival in Kathmandu (1,300 m)

After landing at Tribhuvan International Airport, I was greeted by the bustling energy of Kathmandu. My trekking agency handled my transfer to the hotel, where I met my guide and team. The evening was spent exploring Thamel, a vibrant hub for trekkers, and gathering last-minute gear.

Day 02 – Kathmandu Valley Sightseeing & Trek Preparation

Before heading into the mountains, I explored Kathmandu’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites:

  • Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple) – A sacred stupa with panoramic city views.
  • Pashupatinath Temple – A revered Hindu temple on the banks of the Bagmati River.
  • Boudhanath Stupa – One of the largest Buddhist stupas in the world.

In the afternoon, I checked my gear, received a briefing, and packed for the trek.

Day 03 – Fly to Lukla (2,800 m) & Trek to Phakding (2,652 m) | 3-4 Hours

The scenic 35-minute flight to Lukla was thrilling, with dramatic mountain views. After landing at Tenzing-Hillary Airport, we began our trek through lush valleys, crossing suspension bridges to reach Phakding, a small village along the Dudh Koshi River.

Day 04 – Phakding to Namche Bazaar (3,440 m) | 6 Hours

The trail led through pine forests and over high suspension bridges. After a steep climb, we reached Namche Bazaar, the gateway to the Everest region. This vibrant Sherpa town offers cafes, gear shops, and stunning mountain views.

Day 05 – Acclimatization Day at Namche Bazaar

To adjust to the altitude, we hiked to Everest View Hotel (3,880 m) for our first glimpse of Mt. Everest, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam. The rest of the day was spent exploring Namche’s markets and museums.

Day 06 – Trek to Thyangboche (3,867 m) | 5-6 Hours

The trail offered breathtaking Himalayan vistas. We visited Tengboche Monastery, the largest in the Khumbu region, where monks performed evening prayers.

Day 07 – Trek to Pheriche (4,200 m) | 4-5 Hours

Descending through rhododendron forests, we crossed the Imja River and climbed to Pheriche, a windswept village with a Himalayan Rescue Association clinic.

Day 08 – Acclimatization Day at Pheriche

We hiked to Nangkartshang Peak (5,083 m) for acclimatization, enjoying panoramic views of Makalu and Cho Oyu.

Day 09 – Trek to Lobuche (4,928 m) | 5-6 Hours

The trail passed through Dughla, where we paid respects at the Everest Memorials. The thin air became noticeable as we reached Lobuche, a cold and rocky settlement.

Day 10 – Trek to Gorakshep (5,160 m) & Visit Everest Base Camp (5,316 m) | 6-7 Hours

A challenging hike over the Khumbu Glacier led to Gorakshep, the last stop before Everest Base Camp (EBC). Walking among tents of Everest expeditions was surreal.

Day 11 – Early Hike to Kala Patthar (5,545 m) & Trek to Dingboche (4,358 m) | 7-8 Hours

At 4 AM, we ascended Kala Patthar for a sunrise view of Everest. The golden light on the summit was unforgettable. After descending, we trekked to Dingboche, a scenic village surrounded by peaks.

Day 12 – Trek to Chhukung Valley (4,730 m) | 2-3 Hours

A short but steep hike took us to Chhukung, the starting point for Island Peak. We met our climbing guide and checked our gear.

Day 13 – Trek to Island Peak Base Camp (5,200 m) | 3-4 Hours

The trail crossed glacial moraines, leading to Island Peak Base Camp, where we practiced rope techniques, crampon use, and ice-axe handling.

Day 14 – Trek to High Camp (5,600 m) | 2-3 Hours

A steep climb brought us to High Camp, where we rested early for the summit push. The thin air made sleeping difficult, but excitement kept us going.

Day 15 – Island Peak Summit (6,189 m) & Return to Chhukung

We started at 1 AM, climbing a steep ice wall with fixed ropes. The final ridge was exposed but thrilling. At 6:30 AM, we stood on the summit, with 360° views of Lhotse, Makalu, and Ama Dablam. After celebrating, we descended to Chhukung, exhausted but elated.

Day 16 – Trek to Pangboche (3,930 m) | 5-6 Hours

Descending through lush valleys, we reached Pangboche, home to an ancient monastery.

Day 17 – Trek to Namche Bazaar (3,440 m) | 5 Hours

Retracing our steps, we enjoyed familiar landscapes with a newfound appreciation.

Day 18 – Trek to Lukla (2,800 m) | 6-7 Hours

The final trekking day was long but rewarding, ending with a celebratory dinner in Lukla.

Day 19 – Fly Back to Kathmandu

The short flight returned us to Kathmandu, where we relaxed and shared stories.

Day 20 – Departure Day

With unforgettable memories, I bid farewell to Nepal, already dreaming of my next adventure.
